Description
Woodland-Old City Cemetery is located at 1000 and 1022 E. McCarty Street in Jefferson City, Cole County, Missouri. The grounds combine Woodland Cemetery, established in 1822, and Old City Cemetery, established in 1838, and are recognized as the oldest cemetery in Jefferson City and possibly the oldest in Cole County. The adjoining sections have no visible boundary, although grave-marker orientations differ between them. Historically known also as City Cemetery, Fairview Cemetery, and Old City Cemetery, the property reflects Jefferson City’s early development and includes burials of settlers, government officials, business leaders, soldiers, formerly enslaved people, and other residents. Woodland-Old City Cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 23, 2018, for associations with exploration, settlement, and politics and government. More than 2,700 people are documented as interred there, including prominent local figures such as businessman Joseph Marcus Clarke, whose Carthage-limestone family mausoleum overlooks McCarty Street.
