Description

The Great Heath Barrow is a Ring Barrow, one of Ireland's most common prehistoric burial types. This particular barrow is a low mound surrounded by a concentric ditch with an external bank. It is part of a larger Barrow Cemetery in Greatheath and is the most accessible of the monuments. While barrows are believed to have been primarily used for funerary purposes, they also had ceremonial functions. The nearby Rath na tDarbh is an excellent example of a ceremonial barrow.
