Description

The graveyard at Corglass Church holds deep historical significance, reflecting pivotal events in Irish history. Known as the "Church of the Rebels," it witnessed the tragic 1798 Battle of Rebel Hill, where many United Irishmen perished. The graveyard contains memorials tied to notable figures, including Rev. Thomas Byers, a former minister and later Moderator of the General Assembly. Burials here and at nearby sites, such as the old cemetery at Piggery Hill and Bellasis Church, feature ornate tombstones and inscriptions detailing connections to local families like the Byers. These sites, while deteriorating, remain vital historical records of the area's cultural and political heritage.
