Description
Oakland Cemetery is located at 805 Oakland Avenue SE in Hutchinson, Minnesota, and is owned and operated by the City of Hutchinson. Established in 1857, it began after the death of a four-year-old boy whose mother reportedly opposed burying him on the open prairie; city records also document two additional burials that year. The cemetery now occupies approximately 34 acres in south-central Hutchinson and contains more than 7,000 burials. Its name reflects the mature oak trees that remain a defining feature of the grounds. In addition to traditional burial, the cemetery provides columbarium and cremation burial areas. Public burial searches are available through the city, while office visits are generally by appointment in winter and scheduled summer hours.
