Description

Moyrus Cemetery is a historic burial site located near the seashore at Tra Mhairios, with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The cemetery contains the remains of a remarkably well-preserved medieval church, notable for its arched window constructed using limestone boated over from Inis Mór, showcasing exquisite medieval craftsmanship. The surrounding cemetery is scattered with small boulders and large rocks, marking the graves of victims of the Great Famine of 1845-49. In the 1850s, the site became the focal point of conflict between the Catholic congregation at Moyrus and the I.C.M.S-run Protestant Bible school and church located across the strand. This peaceful yet historically significant location reflects both the cultural and social struggles of its time.
