Description

Maple Avenue Cemetery is located on State Highway 311 at Maple Avenue in West Patterson, Town of Patterson, Putnam County, New York. The cemetery forms part of a group of adjoining church burial grounds whose earliest recorded grave is that of Thomas Flemming, who died in 1792. As the church cemeteries filled, the Maple Avenue Cemetery Association was formed, and its trustees purchased land along Maple Avenue in 1863. The grounds were enlarged in 1898 through the acquisition of adjoining property, with later development extending east and north. Early sections contain family plots and Civil War graves, while the associated churchyards include burials of Revolutionary War veterans and local Presbyterian clergy, including Henry Ludington, Reverend David Close, and Reverend E. P. Benedict. New York State identifies the Maple Avenue Cemetery Association as the responsible cemetery organization; local historical materials also place the cemetery within Patterson’s historic district along Route 311.
