Description
Linwood Cemetery is located on the west edge of Galesburg in Knox County, Illinois, near West Main Street and Linwood Road. The Linwood Cemetery Association was organized in 1856 and purchased approximately 30 acres before conveying the grounds to the City of Galesburg on December 15, 1857. The city continues to own and maintain Linwood Cemetery as a public burial ground. Its municipal cemetery system includes East Linwood Cemetery, an approximately 22-acre addition acquired around March 19, 1928. A memorial in Linwood honors Mary A. Bickerdyke, a Civil War nurse, whose husband and daughter are also buried there. Burial information is available through the cemetery office, Galesburg City Hall, and the Galesburg Public Library’s Linwood and East Linwood cemetery database.
