Description
I’on Cemetery is a historic family cemetery in Mount Pleasant, Charleston County, South Carolina, near Robert Mills Circle and Edenton Road. It is also known as Hobcaw Cemetery, the Bond Family Cemetery, and the Read Family Cemetery. The grounds contain the Maybank, Bond, Read, and I’on family burial sites, with the earliest documented burial dating to 1746. Jacob Bond I’on erected a large obelisk monument in 1854 to honor members of these families, including himself; he died in 1859 and was buried here. The monument was restored and rededicated in 1996 after suffering vandalism, and perimeter fencing was added in 2005. A historical marker was installed nearby in 2007, while only fragments of some older gravestones remain. ([hmdb.org](https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=39256&utm_source=openai))
