Description
Gorton Cemetery, formerly known as Old Gorton Cemetery, is in the City of Corning, Steuben County, New York, near the intersection of Park Avenue and Third Street. ([paintedhills.org](https://www.paintedhills.org/STEUBEN/OldGortonCem.html?utm_source=openai)) The surviving monuments include burials dating from the early nineteenth century, with documented stones for individuals who died as early as 1826. ([paintedhills.org](https://www.paintedhills.org/STEUBEN/OldGortonCem.html?utm_source=openai)) The property is owned by the City of Corning, while the Corning Lions Club has maintained the grounds since 1989. ([corninglionsclub.org](https://corninglionsclub.org/post.php?pid=265&utm_source=openai)) Flooding from Hurricane Agnes in 1972 displaced or damaged gravestones, and some graves may no longer be accurately marked. ([corninglionsclub.org](https://corninglionsclub.org/post.php?pid=265&utm_source=openai)) A 2011 dedication recognized Justus Wolcott, a Revolutionary War veteran buried there, and the cemetery’s recorded interments include five Revolutionary War soldiers and one War of 1812 veteran. ([paintedhills.org](https://www.paintedhills.org/STEUBEN/OldGortonCem.html?utm_source=openai)) Genealogical inventories and cemetery transcriptions can help researchers identify surviving stones and additional burials.
