Description

Fort Plain Cemetery is located at 38 Clyde Street in the Village of Fort Plain, Town of Minden, Montgomery County, New York. The Fort Plain Cemetery Association was organized on March 4, 1864, consolidating burial grounds that had previously been scattered around the village; most graves from the earlier cemetery were moved to the present grounds by 1854. ([fortplaincemetery.com](https://www.fortplaincemetery.com/history?utm_source=openai)) The cemetery occupies approximately 37 acres and reflects the rural-cemetery movement of the nineteenth century, with grounds developed on elevated land overlooking Fort Plain. ([co.montgomery.ny.us](https://www.co.montgomery.ny.us/documents/historian/MontgomeryCounty_UGRR.pdf?utm_source=openai)) Its principal architectural feature is the Catherine Nellis Memorial Chapel, donated by Maria Nellis Harper Benedict and dedicated in 1907. ([fortplaincemetery.com](https://www.fortplaincemetery.com/history?utm_source=openai)) Sections include African American burials, Civil War veterans, World War I servicemen and nurses, veterans’ organizations, and Fort Plain firefighters. ([co.montgomery.ny.us](https://www.co.montgomery.ny.us/documents/historian/MontgomeryCounty_UGRR.pdf?utm_source=openai)) The cemetery association maintains burial records and advises that ash interments require permission from the superintendent; current contact information is provided through the cemetery office.
