Description

Fenloe Graveyard in County Clare is tied to an ancient monastic site, with parts of its church walls dating back to pre-1000AD. St. Luctighern, its patron, is honored with a well in excellent condition. The cemetery is rich in folklore, including sculptured faces on the east wall and a tradition of coffin access. The site faced decline after its closure in 1744 during the penal laws, with further collapses in 1907 and 2007. Fenloe remains significant in Ireland's religious history, tracing its origins to around 540AD.
