Description
Colora Friends Meeting Cemetery is located beside the historic Colora Meetinghouse on Colora Road in Colora, Cecil County, Maryland. The adjoining Friends meetinghouse was built in 1841 from local stone after a doctrinal division within West Nottingham Friends Meeting, and the burial ground lies immediately east of the building. Enclosed by stone walls, the cemetery contains simple grave markers characteristic of Quaker burial grounds. Documented burials include Jane Canby, a daughter of Betsy Ross, two of Ross’s granddaughters, and Lloyd Balderston I, who founded and named Colora and established an early plant nursery. The meetinghouse property also includes a two-story building constructed in 1869 that served as a Friends schoolhouse before later becoming a caretaker’s residence. The meetinghouse is no longer home to an active Friends community, so visitors should confirm access in advance; genealogical records are held in Quaker archival collections.
