Description
Castleinch, located about two miles south of Kilkenny, is home to St. David’s Church and Graveyard, which dates back to the 1600s. The church, originally Catholic and later converted to Protestant, is now a ruin surrounded by the graveyard, where the Earls of Desart are buried. The area, once home to prominent families such as the Cuffes, Comerfords, and de Valle family, has deep historical significance. Recent efforts by a local committee, led by Richard Ryan, have focused on preserving and promoting the site. A book, Castleinch Kilkenny: Connections Through Time, details the history of the area, including the gravestone inscriptions at St. David’s Church. The cemetery is also home to many notable Kilkenny families, and its connections extend internationally, including ties to U.S. President Barack Obama and the White House architect James Hoban. The book's proceeds will fund ongoing preservation efforts.
