Description

Bunratty Graveyard in County Clare surrounds the historic parish church established in the 1250s by Norman knight Robert de Muscregros. The graveyard, dating back over 800 years, holds the remains of over thirty generations, reflecting the social and economic disparities of the time through a mix of unmarked graves and elaborate tombs.

Notable features include the Studdert Family Vault, associated with the Anglo-Irish family who once owned Bunratty Castle, and memorials to other prominent families like the Dawsons, Daltons, and Butlers. A unique element is a memorial to Private Williams, a British soldier whose body was lost after drowning near Bunratty Bridge in 1921. The graveyard also showcases fine examples of stone carving and inscriptions, such as the Kean and McNamara slabs and the Considine memorial.
