Description

Abbeymahon graveyard, located off Chapel Lane in Skibbereen, came into use around 1830 and served the community for over a century, with occasional burials still taking place today. It was likely established to support the Protestant population, including prominent local families like the Levis, Wolfe, and Swanton families, whose names still echo in Skibbereen. Notable burials include Frederick Peel Eldon Potter, founder of the Skibbereen Eagle newspaper, and John J. Marshal, a Poor Law Inspector instrumental during the Great Famine. The graveyard also hosts figures tied to famine relief, rebellion, and history, such as Dr. St John Clerke and United Irishman Robert Swanton.
