Description

Calvary Cemetery is a Roman Catholic cemetery at 874 West Main Street in Lexington, Fayette County, operated by the Diocese of Lexington. The grounds were consecrated on January 14, 1874, after Bishop Augustus M. Toebbe acquired approximately 20 acres, and Thomas Cronin became the first recorded interment on April 6, 1875. It replaced Lexington’s Old Third Street Cemetery, with many remains transferred there between 1875 and 1893. The 1887 gatehouse and office incorporate doors, windows, and brick from the former home of Robert and Ann Parker, parents of Mary Todd Lincoln. Renamed Calvary Cemetery in 1921, the site later received a six-foot Stewart Iron Works fence along West Main Street and the Holy Innocents Garden in 1973; it now covers 21.92 acres. The gates are generally open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ([cdlex.org](https://cdlex.org/about-calvary/?utm_source=openai))
