Description
First Presbyterian Church of Newtown Cemetery was located in Elmhurst, Queens County, New York, across Queens Boulevard from the congregation’s present church. A cemetery associated with the church was established around 1822, and more than 300 people were buried there between 1822 and 1929. In 1901, remains and markers from several early Presbyterian burials in Newtown’s older town cemetery were reinterred in the churchyard, including those of ministers Samuel Pumroy, Simon Horton, and Peter Fish. By the mid-20th century, the grounds had deteriorated and suffered vandalism, and the church sold the property in 1958. The remaining graves were disinterred and moved to a dedicated plot in the Prospect Hill section of Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn, where a commemorative marker remains. The former Queens Boulevard site is now occupied by an apartment building, so burial visits and record research should be directed to Evergreens Cemetery or the church’s historical archives.
