Description

Woodland Cemetery is located at 281 Dayton Avenue in Xenia, Greene County, Ohio, and has served the community since its charter was approved by the Ohio General Assembly on February 25, 1845. The first burial, Mary Ann Hollingshead, took place on December 7, 1847, and the grounds were developed as a rural, park-like cemetery inspired by the garden-cemetery movement. Landscape architect Howard Daniels prepared an early plan, and the cemetery eventually expanded to approximately 60 acres. Several smaller local and rural cemeteries, including German Reformed, Methodist, and Associate Reformed burial grounds, were relocated here. Four large columns at the entrance were moved from Xenia’s former courthouse, while a mausoleum completed in 1999 provides crypts and cremation niches. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; burial and mausoleum information is available from the cemetery staff.
