Neshonoc Cemetery – West Salem – United States

Neshonoc Cemetery is located near West Salem in the Town of Hamilton, La Crosse County, Wisconsin, about one mile north of the village. It is an active, non-denominational cemetery associated with the area that once contained the original village of Neshonoc.The cemetery is the burial place of Hamlin Garland, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and poet born in West Salem; his ashes were returned there in 1940 and placed beside his parents, with his wife also buried nearby. A Wisconsin historical marker recognizes Garland at the cemetery, and a plaque identifies the family gravesite. The cemetery lies along State Highway 108 near the junction with Highway 16, and local cemetery records provide grave locations and genealogical information for research.
