Description
Highland Cemetery is a city-owned cemetery on Hill Street in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts. Originally known as New Hill Cemetery, it was established in 1800. The cemetery occupies approximately 12.4 acres, with an additional small city-owned parcel at 10 Hill Street. Its burials reflect Newburyport’s maritime and civic history, including sea captains, immigrants, African American residents, privateers, and Caleb Cushing, who served as U.S. attorney general and was later buried here. The grounds also include memorials associated with a nationally recognized artist and a Civil War nurse. Cemetery maps and related records are available through the Newburyport Public Library by request or appointment.
