The Canton of Zurich is located in north-central Switzerland and is centered on the city of Zurich, the canton’s administrative capital. Zurich joined the Swiss Confederacy in 1351 and is Switzerland’s most populous canton. It covers approximately 1,728.9 square kilometres and includes 12 districts and 160 political municipalities as of January 2026. The canton is administered by a seven-member Government Council and a 180-member Cantonal Parliament.
