Ancient Burying Ground – Hartford – United States

Ancient Burying Ground is a historic cemetery in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, at the corner of Main, Gold, and Pearl Streets beside First Church of Christ (Center Church).

Established by the municipality in 1640, it served as Hartford’s only municipal cemetery until 1807.

The grounds contain more than 600 grave markers, including the 1835 Founders’ Monument and a 1998 memorial to an estimated 300 African Americans buried in unmarked graves.

The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and is part of the Connecticut Freedom Trail.
